Unshakable - Deluge
Integrity Music
Quick Tip: One part art rock, one part piano ballad, Unshakable
presents congregational worship as both musically aggressive and beautifully intimate. If you need to get away from the typical shiny guitar opening, bridge-focused, and a-few-strings-thrown-in-for-good-measure formula that inundates the Christian music world, go no further than Deluge. That homogenizing temptation was absent in the studio sessions of
Unshakable. Fronted by Jonathan Stockstill (writer of the song "Let the Church Rise"), this youth worship band out of Baton Rouge quite simply gets art rock. And they are brining it to church. When
Unshakable is at
its best, it's huge, it's powerful, and it's absolutely a must grab. Of course there is a large piano ballad portion to the release, and the down-tempos are affecting in their beauty, just not as interesting. One of the standouts, however, "Refuge," puts the faithfulness of God in context of trials and tribulations and will be a great addition to a worship set list. "Let's Worship," with a vocal contribution of Kari Jobe, is more of a spiritual song with simple truths like "He loves us" and "I will sing from the overflow of my heart."
It's hard to miss the kick drum on a record like
Unshakable. It keeps the up-tempo rhythms punchy and ultimately, intimidating. But individual songs become accessible in pure worship sentiment and have the ability to get deconstructed into singable congregational songs. A fine grab for any worship professional.
Play List: "Unshakable," "Refuge," "Deeper,"
